The team is focused on capturing the promise of new tools for editing DNA to help solve the challenges of climate change and the growing world population by applying the tools to plant breeding. While working to improve the tools themselves, we are using them to assess the feasibility of efficiently moving DNA sequences that code for traits like disease resistance and drought tolerance from crop varieties in which they naturally occur, to otherwise high quality or high yielding varieties that lack such traits. We focus on rice, a global staple and a useful model for cereal biology.
